Federal Funding Announced For Social Infrastructure
On April 7, the federal government officially launched the $51 billion Build Communities Strong Fund. The announcement included the first project in British Columbia: a zero-carbon community centre to be located in Vancouver’s Marpole neighbourhood.
About the Fund
The launch of the Build Communities Strong Fund represents a $51 billion investment over the next decade and will support a range of infrastructure projects across the country.
The Direct Delivery stream of the Fund will provide $6 billion over 10 years, to deliver regionally significant projects and important local infrastructure, including large building retrofits, climate adaptation infrastructure, and community infrastructure such as new community and recreation spaces.

The Build Communities Strong Fund emphasizes momentum and rapid delivery.
Eligible project proponents are urged to send their initial expressions of interest for shovel-ready projects as soon as possible to [email protected].
Eligible project proponents should provide the following information in their email:
- Applicant information: legal name, recipient type (i.e., not-for-profit, municipality, Indigenous recipient), and contact information;
- Project description: objective, estimated costs, anticipated federal funding share requested, class estimates; and
- Estimated construction start date.
Funding will be prioritized for shovel-ready projects that can start within the next 12 months and have Class C estimates at a minimum.
More detailed information on next steps and priority investment areas will be provided in the coming weeks. Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada will contact applicants whose submissions are shortlisted for next steps.
