Each Fitness Leader that obtains BCRPA Fitness Leader Registration automatically receives Commercial General Liabilityinsurance coverage through Sport BC Insurance.

New This Year! We have secured a $5M insurance coverage option. When you renew you’ll have the option to renew with $2M or a $5M Commercial General Liabilityinsurance coverage.

If you are a Personal Trainer and need this coverage before your renewal date, it can be purchased on your The Registry® of Fitness Professionals account. This additional insurance costs $110 for the $2M policy and $175 for the $5M policy, check the page below for more information.

This program ensures that you have adequate insurance coverage as long as you are:

  • Currently registered with BCRPA with valid CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Working within your Scope of Practice
  • Working at locations within Canada

Scope of Practice Limitations:

Older Adult Fitness, Aquatic Fitness, Group Fitness, Osteofit, Pilates Fitness, Weight Training, Yoga Fitness (excluding Bikram Yoga and Inversion), Fitness Theory, Personal Trainers

Designated Operations or Entities Exclusion:

  • Instruction of professional Athletes or carded amateur athletes;
  • Work related Rehabilitation of any condition;
  • Tanning / toning beds;
  • Infraredsauna;
  • Hot Yoga;
  • Bikram Yoga;
  • Operation of commercial studios (including in-home) owned, leased, or rented on long term basis.

  • Abuse
  • Errors and Omissions
  • Sanction limitation
  • Contagion exclusion
  • Asbestos (total exclusion)
  • Data
  • Cyber incident
  • Recording and distribution of material or information in violation of law (anti-spam)
  • Terrorism
  • Limited fungi and fungal
  • Derivatives coverage
  • Rehabilitation of any condition
  • Programs marketed or promoted to children or youth under the age of majority in BC – 19.

Policy territory is Canada and the US, with worldwide coverage for claims brought back to Canada or the US.

Remember that it is your responsibility to keep your BCRPA Registration and your CPR and your First Aid certifications valid

Temporary Practicum Insurance for Fitness Students

For Fitness Students who are in the process of completing their practicum hours towards registration requirements, BCRPA provides temporary practicum insurance for Group Fitness, Aquatic Fitness, Yoga Fitness, Pilates Fitness, and Weight Training modules.

This one-year insurance policy automatically starts when you pass the Fitness Theory Exam and pay the 1-year registration fee of $105.

Note: You then have one year to complete all practical components of your core module course, and to submit your ICE package in order to become fully registered in this new specialty.

Insurance for Online Training

Insurance coverage for online fitness training is now covered under the General Liability Insurance as a BCRPA Registered Fitness Leader.

Sport BC's requirements for providing insurance coverage to BCRPA Registered Fitness Leaders who conduct online training and classes are:

  • Online training can be pre-recorded and does not need 2-way communication, however a disclaimer is required.
  • Online training can be 100% of a Fitness Leader's gross income
  • All participants must be registered clients and attendance must be recorded by the instructor.
  • Instructors must keep record of the following information for each online class conducted:
    • Date and time of the course
    • Instructor’s remote location, bearing in mind facilities are closed
    • Class Content (activities to be conducted)
    • Number of Participants (ensure all participants are current registered clients before the start of the session)
  • Publicly-accessible broadcast tools such Facebook Live, YouTube, Instagram Live, etc. are not acceptable methods of delivering online training 
  • Permitted delivery tools must include the use of controlled, multi-screen video conferencing programs such as Skype or Zoom (ZOOM.US)
  • Class is limited to the number of participants that can be viewed on a single screen and no more than four (4) participants in one location while following the Provincial Physical Distancing Guidelines
  • All injuries are to be documented
