This module includes the Personal Training Course, passing the Personal Training Exam, and completion of the Personal Training ICE.

Prerequisite
Before you can become a Personal Trainer, you’ll need to complete the Weight Training Core Specialty Module.
Personal Training Course
The BCRPA-approved Personal Training Module is based on Fitness Leadership Canada’s Personal Training Performance Standards and includes a minimum of 32 hours of instruction.
Only courses from verified providers listed below are recognized by BCRPA for Fitness Registration. These providers meet BCRPA standards and are approved to offer the Personal Training Advanced Specialty course within this module.

Note: Fitness related in-person and online workshops count toward professional development and are for CECs only – they do not qualify as a specialty module course. CECs are a registration renewal requirement that comes into effect once you have completed your first year of registration. Fitness Students are not required to earn CECs.

Ready to Write the BCRPA Personal Training Exam?
If your goal is to become a BCRPA Personal Trainer, passing the Personal Training Exam is a must. It’s based on Fitness Leadership Canada’s Personal Training Performance Standards, and you’ll need a minimum score of 70% to pass.
Some course providers offer the exam directly, or you can write it with an external proctor. Need further details ? No problem.
Once you pass, you’ll have one year from your exam date to register as a Personal Trainer. Make sure your Weight Training registration, CPR, and First Aid certifications stay current while you complete everything.
Exam Details:
- Cost: $90 + tax
- Format: Paper-based exam (must be proctored)
- Length: 60 questions (multiple choice, match-ups & 1 case study)
- Time: 3 hours
- Passing Grade: 70%

ICE Practical
Instructor Competency Evaluation (ICE)
The Personal Training ICE (Instructor Competency Evaluation) has two parts: a written section and an in-person component. For further details, contact your evaluator for detailed steps and instructions.
Completing Your ICE
You’ll complete your ICE with a qualified Personal Training ICE Evaluator. Fees for this service range depending on the evaluator.
Before getting started:
- Download and read your Personal Training ICE Package.
- Review the Case Studies Forms.
- Find and contact a certified ICE Evaluator.
Once your ICE is complete and you’ve passed, your Evaluator will send everything directly to BCRPA.
Heads-up: Processing can take 5–10 business days
You’re Covered (With Insurance!)
As long as your BCRPA Registration is active, you’re covered by BCRPA’s insurance policy while completing your practical components—including your ICE.
To stay covered:
- Keep your CPR and First Aid certifications valid at all times.
- Complete all Practicum and ICE requirements.
- Finish your Weight Training Core Specialty Module before your First-Year Registration expires.
If you complete your Personal Training specialty while still in your first year and require insurance coverage for work, you will need to update your insurance coverage. Connect with our team to discuss your options!
Once everything’s done and approved, your Personal Training specialty will be officially added to your account on The Registry® of Fitness Professionals.
