There are numerous playground related injuries reported on an annual basis.Playground safety training is a must for staff from parks and recreation, school districts, child care facilities, health departments, landscape architects and others responsible for play equipment areas or playgrounds.
The BCRPA and CPRA offer two different training options both providing quality instruction on playground safety.
1. BCRPA Playground Safety Awareness Course
A one-day course for those participants who need an introduction or refresher on playground safety and the Canadian Standards Association’s (CSA) Children’s Playspaces and Equipment Standards.
2. CPRA/CPSI Canadian Certified Playground Inspector Certification program
A four-day intensive program that helps individuals thoroughly understand the Canadian Standards Association’s (CSA) Children’s Playspaces and Equipment Standards.
- Theory Course (Part 1)
A two-day theoretical course for participants to learn and understand the technical requirements contained within the CSA Children’s Playspaces and Equipment Standards (this can be completed on-line).
- Practical Course (Part 2)
A two-day practical course with hands on training for applying the Canadian Standards Association’s (CSA) Children’s Playspaces and Equipment Standards and for performing an audit.

About the Instructors
Tim Richards is a Parks and Recreation consultant with a special interest in the Canadian Playground Standard, and has worked with his own firm for over 25 years. He has authored then instructed the BCRPA Playground Safety Awareness for 14 years and is an active instructor and developer of the Canadian Playground Safety Institute. His firm has provided hundreds of independent playground inspections as well as expert witness reports. He has been an active contributor and member of the BCRPA for several decades, and at home serves on the Board of Directors of his local Credit Union.
Chris Revitt has worked in the City of Burnaby's, Parks and Recreation Department for the past 20 years. Chris holds a Canadian Playground Inspector Certificate and has extensive knowledge in building, repairing, maintaining and inspecting playgrounds.
