Changes for Fitness Students

BCRPA recognizes the challenges COVID-19 poses to Fitness Students  who are in their first year of BCRPA registration, and are currently unable to take a course or complete the Instructor Competency Evaluation required to obtain a specialty.

To support you during this period, BCRPA has made the following two changes:

  • If your BCRPA registration expiration is between February 1, 2020, and August 1, 2020 we will extend your registration period by 90 days. For example: if your registration expired on February 1, 2020, it will now be valid until April 30, 2020.
  • All First Aid and CPR certifications with expiration between February 1, 2020, and August 1, 2020, will be extended for 90 days beyond their expiry date. For example: if your First Aid and/or CPR certification had an expiry date of February 1, 2020, it will now be valid until April 30, 2020.

Registered Fitness Leader Expiry Date Extension

All BCRPA Fitness Leader registrations that expire between March 1, 2020 and August 1, 2020 have now been extended by 90 days beyond the expiry date. For example: if your registration had an expiry date of March 1, 2020, it is now be valid until May 1, 2020.

First Aid and CPR Certifications for Registered Fitness Leaders

To make the renewal process easier for you during this period, we have made the following change:

  • All First Aid and CPR certifications which expire between February 1, 2020, and August 1, 2020 will be extended for 90 days beyond their expiry date. For example: this means if your First Aid and/or CPR certification had an expiry date of February 1, 2020, it will now be valid until April 30, 2020.

The requirement to obtain 12 CECs (or 16 if you are a TFL or SFL) during your registration period remains the same. There is a wide availability of online workshops that can be taken to satisfy this criteria. You can find a list of BCRPA-approved online workshops on this page under Workshops (Continuing Education).

Insurance Coverage – Delivering Online Training

UPDATE: Please see the following form for all the information you need to know regarding offering online fitness classes from HUB International

Online Fitness Class Coverage

HUB International Insurance, has updated their requirements for providing insurance coverage to any BCRPA Registered Fitness Leader that conducts online training and classes:

  • Online training can now be 100% of a Fitness Leader's gross income
  • This accommodation will be in place from now until September 30, 2020.

This extended coverage will be initiated once Fitness Leaders advise HUB insurance in writing before initiating online classes.

The extended coverage is subject to a fee of $10 and the following restrictions:

  • Participants may be new or existing participants.
  • Participants must login to the permitted delivery tool, and register to participate in a class.
  • Participants must have completed the necessary Par-Q forms.
  • Publicly accessible broadcast tools such Instagram Live, Facebook Live, YouTube, etc., and pre-recorded videos are not acceptable methods of delivering online training. This is because these platforms do not allow two way video and communication for fitness leaders to determine if participants are in distress, or performing exercises in a way that could lead to injury.
  • Permitted delivery tools must include the use of controlled, multi-screen video conferencing programs with two-way video and communication, such as Skype or Zoom.
  • All injuries must be documented.
  • Instruction to professional athletes and carded amateur athletes is strictly prohibited.
  • Coverage does not extend to work-related rehabilitation of any condition.

Instructors must advise HUB International Insurance Brokers in writing before initiating online classes that exceed 10% of their gross revenues, and include the following information:

  1. Number of online classes per week
  2. Instructor’s remote location, bearing in mind facilities are closed
  3. Class content (activities to be conducted)
  4. Number of participants per class (ensure all participants are currently registered before the start of the session)
  5. Class is limited to the number of participants that can be viewed on a single screen, with no more than four (4) participants in one location while following Provincial Physical Distancing Guidelines
  6. Participants must have completed the necessary Par-Q forms.

If Fitness Leaders will be conducting online classes that exceed 10% of their gross revenues, they will need to contact us directly at TOS.Team-FitnessLeaders@hubinternational.com or 604-269-1919 to have an endorsement issued.

The additional premium charged will be $10.00 to offer unlimited online training until September 30, 2020. This is payable to HUB International Insurance directly, contact HUB directly by email or by calling 604-269-1919.

Please note: BCRPA will no longer be answering any insurance-related questions or replying to insurance-related inquires. If you have further insurance-related questions, please contact HUB directly by email or by calling 604-269-1919.

Once you have logged in, be sure to complete your contact details such as your Name, Address, and Phone Number.

How do I become a Fitness Leader?

Within Canada and BC, there is no legal requirement for fitness leaders to be registered, trained, or associated with a specific organization. However, many employers or clients will look for Fitness Leaders that are registered or certified by a specific organization. There are several organizations within BC that provide registration and training and I would recommend touching base with your local fitness facilities or your client base to gauge the current demand.

With that being said, the BCRPA is widely recognized and is recognized nationally through the National Fitness Leadership Alliance (NFLA). BCRPA registered Fitness Leaders have recognition within the fitness industry as having met certain qualifications and standards as professionals.

For a full step by step guide to become registered with the BCRPA, you can go to the How to Become Registered section.

As we recognize that many individuals come to the BCRPA having a range of experience and education, we also have Course-by Pass, Transfer, and Grandparent applications that may allow you to by-pass certain portions of the registration process. You can find more information at the How to Become Registered section.

First Aid and CPR certification details

How do I add my First Aid/CPR certification details to my account?

On the "Main Page" of your account on The Registry®, there will be a black box that has your First Aid/CPR details. If this is your first time entering your First Aid or CPR information into your account, it will say "No First Aid on Record/No CPR on Record". Click the "Update Now" link to fill out a brief form to input this information.

Course Type:

If you took your First Aid/CPR together, select "CPR and First Aid" under course type.

Certifying organization:

Select the organization that you took your certification with; if it is not listed, select "other" and type out the name of the organization in the Text Box that appears immediately below.

Course Dates:

  • From date: The day you started your First Aid/CPR course
  • To date: The day that you ended the course; if you took a one day course, you can leave this field blank.

Expiration date:

  • This is the expiration date listed on your certificate.
  • If no expiry date is specified, then input the date as 2 years from the date of issue.

Click the "Terms and Conditions" box and then "Save.

You are not required to submit copies of your certificates, unless you are flagged for a random audit after inputting your details.

What are the First Aid and CPR certification requirements?

BCRPA requires a minimum of Emergency First Aid and CPR-A; higher levels such as Standard First Aid and CPR-C are also acceptable.

We consider First Aid & CPR valid according to the expiry date listed on the certificate; if no expiry date is listed, we will accept it as current for 2 years from the date of issue. Depending on your employer or facility, they may require higher levels or a more frequent re-certification.

First Aid/CPR must come from the following organizations or from companies that are authorized by them to provide these certifications:

  • Red Cross
  • St. John's Ambulance
  • Canadian Ski Patrol
  • Lifesaving Society, or
  • Heart and Stroke Foundation.

All courses must be done in-person; online training will not be accepted.

Courses, workshops and continuing education credits (CECs)

What's the difference between a pre-approved workshop and external workshop?

BCRPA registered fitness leaders are required to complete Continuing Education Credits (CECs) in order to renew their registration with the BCRPA every two years. There are many ways to earn CECs with most fitness leaders taking workshops throughout the two year time period in order to expand their knowledge and expertise in a specific subject area related to the fitness industry.

There are two types of workshops: pre-approved workshops and external workshops.

Pre-approved workshops:

Pre-approved workshops will provide you with a guaranteed number of CECs upon completion. In addition, these CECs will automatically be recognized within your personal account on The Registry® of Fitness Professionals as soon as the workshop presenter electronically enters a passing grade for you.

As a service for fitness leaders, the BCRPA generates a current listing of pre-approved workshops being offered by independent workshop providers*. This list is updated regularly on The Registry® website after you have logged in. All workshops listed on The Registry® website have been reviewed by BCRPA staff and have been pre-approved. Approval from the BCRPA means that the presenter is a current BCRPA Supervisor of Fitness Leaders (SFL) or Trainer of Fitness Leaders (TFL) and has provided a workshop outline and all workshop materials for review.

External workshops:

External workshops are not provided with guaranteed CECs in advance. Instead, workshop participants must fill out an online form and submit the required materials to the BCRPA for review following completion of the workshop.

How can I earn Continuing Education Credits (CECs)?

There are a number of ways to earn Continuing Education credits for your renewal. Learn more about them below.

Pre-approved Workshops

The BCRPA provides a current listing of approved workshops. These workshops are offered in a variety of topic areas and are conducted in classroom settings, online and/or through correspondence. The BCRPA reviews and approves workshop content and presenter credentials to confirm their appropriateness for Fitness Leaders. The BCRPA does not administer nor collect any revenue from courses/workshops. It is the workshop presenter or organization, not the BCRPA, who determines when and where the workshops are run and how much is charged.

How do I verify my CECs for this option?

Workshops presenters of BCRPA pre-approved workshops listed on the BCRPA website are required to submit your results online through The Registry® of Fitness Professionals on your behalf within 5 business days of the workshop completion date. You can verify that this has occurred by logging into your account on The Registry® and checking your CEC counter to see if the correct number of CECs have been credited to you. You can also check your My Workshop History page to see if the correct number of CECs have been credited to you. You will also see a listing of workshops that you have completed since the launch of The Registry®.

Pre-approved Fitness Leader Courses

If you are already a Fitness Leader and you take complete specialty module course, you can put that educational time towards your CEC criteria for your upcoming renewal. Please note that adding another module will not increase your CEC requirements at future renewal periods.

How do I verify my CECs for this option?

The conductor of your BCRPA approved course is required to submit your results online through The Registry® on your behalf. You can verify that this has occurred by logging into your account on The Registry® and checking your My Course History page to see if the course conductor has done so.  You can also see a listing of courses that you have completed since the launch of The Registry®.

External workshops (not pre-approved by BCRPA)

If you have attended a conference or taken a course, workshop or some other kind of educational training that wasn’t pre-approved by the BCRPA for CECs, you may still be able to receive credits for it.

How do I have my non BCRPA pre-approved workshop reviewed?

In order to receive CECs for an external workshop, you will need to log into your account on The Registry® of Fitness Professionals and complete the 'External Training - CEC Petition' form. This form is located under ‘COURSES AND WORKSHOPS’ in the top navigation bar of your account. Instructions on completing that form are included in the document entitled ‘Input CECs already earned’ found under ‘USER RESOURCES’, located in the same top navigation bar.

Your submission will be reviewed and you will be sent an email letting you know if your workshop/training has been accepted and the number of CECs earned.

Approvals will be given to professional development workshops/training only. The content must demonstrate that it meets BCRPA continuing education standards. The content must also show that the workshop/training was targeted at improving the professional quality of a fitness leader. While personal development workshops enhance all aspects of a fitness leader's capabilities and BCRPA encourages such undertakings, they will not be granted continuing education credits.

How do I verify my CECs for this option?

You can then verify this information by logging in to your account on The Registry® and checking your My Workshop History page to see if the correct number of CECs have been credited to you. You can also see a listing of workshops that you have completed since the launch of The Registry®.

It is highly recommended that you ask the workshop presenter of any external workshop to provide you with written proof of your completion of their workshop. It also important that you keep all materials provided during the workshop and have these and your proof of completion available for inspection by the BCRPA should it become necessary to verify your work.

Post Secondary Academic Courses

If you are currently taking an accredited college/university course and it’s related to your role as a Fitness Leader, you can receive CECs. 1 college/university credit = 10 BCRPA CECs.

How do I verify my CECs for this option?

Sign in to your account on The Registry® of Fitness Professionals website.

From your User Account page, scroll down to the "CEC Log" accordion. Then, click on the button labelled "Submit CEC Petition". This will allow you to submit your CECs for approval by the BCRPA.

Volunteering with the BCRPA

The BCRPA offers a variety of volunteering opportunities. Those who volunteer with the BCRPA are eligible to receive CECs for their contributions. Credits are determined by the BCRPA after the volunteer duties have been completed.

There are a number of ways to earn credits with the BCRPA as volunteer, including:

  • Volunteering on a BCRPA Committee or Task Group
  • Volunteering for BCRPA conferences, including BCFit®
  • Volunteering at the BCRPA office
