On March 5, 2012 the BCRPA hosted a Healthy Food and Beverage Sales (HFBS) webinar, examining what’s been done in BC to facilitate the adoption of healthy food and beverage options in recreation facilities.
Presenters included Dr. PJ Naylor, Associate Professor in the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education (EPHE) within the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria. Dr. Naylor, presented the evaluation she and the Social Research Demonstration Corporation implemented on all four phases of the BCRPA’s Stay Active Eat Healthy® - Healthy Food and Beverage Sales program. Tom Bryce, Manager of Saanich Commonwealth Place (SCP) in Victoria, and Lisa Bealle, Recreation Programmer at the Harry Jerome Recreation Centre in North Vancouver, both provided first-hand accounts of their experience implementing health food and beverage options into their facilities and shared best practices and important lessons learned.

Dr. PJ Naylor:
Canadian work on food guidelines and supports for publicly funded recreation facilities is on the International forefront. Dr. PJ Naylor, associate professor in the School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education (EPHE) within the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria, and her colleagues have published three articles in academic journals about the food environment in recreation. The information presented during the BCRPA Healthy Food and Beverage Sales webinar came from the evaluation she and the Social Research Demonstration Corporation implemented on all four phases of the Stay Active Eat Healthy® - Healthy Food and Beverage Sales program. Program adoption affected change in four main areas: organizational capacity, vending, over-the-counter food sales, and public education & awareness. Dr. Naylor discussed the key impacts of each of these areas.

Tom Bryce is the Manager of Saanich Commonwealth Place (SCP) in Victoria, BC, a busy community recreation centre with approximately 800,000 annual visits. In 2008 the City introduced the Stay Active Eat Healthy® (SAEH) – Healthy Food and Beverage Sales program into both the vending and food concession of the Centre. This was the City’s first foray into this area and Tom recounted the adoption and implementation experience of his centre, shared some of the gross revenue sales results of pre and post implementation of SAEH, and discussed what other programs / services are currently being offered to the public that complements their healthy food program.

Lisa Bealle is the recreation programmer at the Harry Jerome Recreation Centre in North Vancouver. The City has been involved with healthy eating and beverage sales since December 2009, when it first brought in the Stay Active Eat Healthy® (SAEH) – Healthy Food and Beverage Sales program to the Centre and launched its Play Well, Eat Well Healthy Eating project – a project that was awarded the 2011 BCRPA Healthy Choices award for significantly improving the food environment of a recreation facility. Lisa has been a part of the project since its inception and discussed the journey taken from its development to implementation and how it has grown to include other centres.
