Oliver Woods Community Centre
City of Nanaimo & Gemella Design Inc.

The City of Nanaimo & Gemella Design Inc., has made a dream into reality with its new Oliver woods Community Centre and Open Space Plan.

Built in an urban forest to serve a growing neighbourhood, the centre has had environmental sensitivity built into it right from the start. During construction, soil and trees that were displaced were re-used for the playground. Even an old road section on the site was recycled, used as sub¬base material for the parking lot and landscaping. The effect was a drastic reduction in the amount of rubble that had to be removed from the site. Landscaping choices have been made to be water efficient, using native plant species and capturing stormwater for irrigation. The building’s mechanical systems are energy efficient and attention has even been paid to reduce exterior light pollution. Around the playground, natural trees have been preserved and new trees have been planted. The edge of the forest has been cut in a way that will improve the trees’ resistance to wind and an effort has been made to increase the diversity of native plants. Every effort has been made to adhere to LEED principles.

Inside, the centre boasts a pair of gymnasiums, fitness and multipurpose rooms, a child-minding room, and a public lounge. the building has been designed so parents inside have clear views of the playground. The centre is accessible to people of all physical abilities. Among its accessibility features is the front desk, which is built at a height convenient for those in wheelchairs. Programming reflects this commitment to accessibility, with activities such as wheelchair basketball and soccer. The centre is also home to a community policing station, which enhances security not just for the facility, but the surrounding neighbourhood. And the building showcases local art, in particular a piece depicting a tree sapling and its root system, illustrating the interconnectedness of the community’s natural surroundings and, by extension, the community itself.

Whether they’re looking for quiet time or active play, children flock to this place of imagination. The playground also has a separate area for smaller children. there is plenty of seating in shaded areas. And it connects to a trail system that winds through the forest and links with the neighbourhood. the trails feature resting areas, educational materials focusing on nature, and relics from the area’s forestry history.

Use of the community centre and surrounding open space has been increasing month after month. Locals of all ages come to explore the opportunities, especially the preschool and the adult fitness programs.

The Oliver Woods Community Centre has become a jewel of the city. And so the BCRPA is pleased to present the city of Nanaimo & Gemella Design Inc., with the 2009 Facility Excellence Award.
